Afterschool Learning Center Hempstead Learning Center
The after-school time Learning Center serves at-risk, vulnerable adolescents – runaways, homeless youth, those in foster care and those from struggling families. They receive the support and services they need to prepare them for employment, college and successful adulthood. The center will combine workshops to increase skills that many of these young people lack – from health and nutrition to job seeking skills to learning how to write a winning essay for a college application.
The youth served are part of Family & Children’s Association’s a ground-breaking initiative designed to help at-risk youth become ‘can do’ adults. These are the young people enrolled in our project known as Step Up to Success (SU2S). These teens and young adults may be homeless, in foster care, financially or emotionally challenged, or are dealing with other daunting challenges. A key component of Step Up to Success is connecting these young people with compassionate and concerned adults who are willing to help steer them on their path toward successful adulthood and offer them the assistance and support they need to compete. In terms of teen pregnancy, gang involvement and juvenile crime, the hours between 3 and 7 pm are the most dangerous for young people.
The Learning Center, is open weekdays and offers a varied schedule of workshops. While one group engages in a resume writing class or practices mock employment interviews, another group is attending a “Straight-Talk” Workshop. All programs offer supportive, educational, and enrichment services for youth 14-24 years old.
