FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MINEOLA, NEW YORK, June 28, 2018 – Toni Combs, Owner of Gone Sewin, has been named Family & Children’s Association (FCA)’s “Hero of the Month” for May. Located in Hicksville, Gone Sewin is an award-winning fabric shop that was founded in 2006 and specializes in quilting and sewing supplies.

Toni’s passion for her work was fueled as an employee at JOANN Fabrics and Crafts, where she taught classes to other sewing enthusiasts. She soon decided to launch her own business, Gone Sewin, and has become an instrumental resource for one of FCA’s most “decorated” campaigns: the Safe & Warm Quilt Initiative, introduced in August 2017 to support FCA’s programs for homeless youth on Long Island.

When FCA received a donation of bolts and fabrics from quilt sponsor Marcus Fabric, Toni cut hundreds of 18” x 18” squares, enabling the agency to grow the grassroots campaign and provide opportunities for supporters to create moving messages of hope that will soon make up Long Island’s largest quilt.

Before enhancing FCA’s Safe & Warm Quilt Initiative, Toni contributed to the agency’s Adopt-a-Family campaign. After learning about the initiative through a longtime friend (an FCA donor), she began sewing decorative bags and filled them with books, distributed to client families during the holidays.

Giving back to the community remains one of Toni’s primary goals, and she considers FCA to be an ideal cause to support. “The minute I met FCA staff, I was hooked. As I learned more about the clients and what they can use, just even for their self-esteem, I wanted to help more,” Toni recalls. “I have given to many charities in the past, but never felt as appreciated or part of the organization as FCA has made me feel. Everyone I have met, from Interns to Board Members, have impressed me with their warmth, caring, and pure helpfulness.”

Commenting on Toni’s award, Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, President/CEO of FCA, said, “We’re delighted to recognize Toni as our May ‘Hero of the Month.’ Her dedication to FCA’s mission is truly heartfelt. We’re very grateful that she has shared her love of quilting and sewing with us, while helping to make a difference for so many Long Islanders in need.”
