FCA Holds Annual Scholarship Fund Reception for College-Bound Young People on Long Island
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MINEOLA, NEW YORK, June 21, 2018 – On June 20, 2018, Mineola-based nonprofit Family & Children’s Association (FCA) presented its 33rd annual Mission Moment Scholarship Fund breakfast at the NYIT deServersky Mansion in Glen Head, New York.
For more than three decades, the scholarship fund has aimed to guide young people toward successful futures by enabling at-risk youth to pursue higher education and improve their lives. More than 50 college scholarships are awarded each year. The annual reception recognizes the extraordinary achievements of scholarship winners, and the dedicated staff and donors who contribute to the program.
This year’s event featured a keynote by best-selling author Darryl Davis, CSP, whose books include How to Become a Power Agent in Real Estate and How to Design a Life Worth Smiling About. Davis discussed his distinguished publishing and sales careers, as well as his successful stint in the entertainment business. Several of the scholarship recipients had already met Darryl from his visit to FCA’s Learning Center in Hempstead, NY. The reception also gave scholarship recipients the opportunity to meet the FCA donors who helped make their journey possible.
Glenda Umana, a client with FCA’s HER TURN program helping underserved women in the Hempstead, New York area, spoke to the crowd about her resilience and ability to grow with the support of FCA. “As I look into the audience and see all these scholarship recipients ready to go to school, I am truly inspired to see how pursuing higher education is achievable no matter what stage of life a person is in,” noted Glenda. “This is truly a real credit to the good work that is being done by Family & Children’s Association, and I thank you all.”
Following Glenda, Darryl Davis shared his story from being an emancipated teenager living on his own at the age of 16, to spending a decade researching happiness, to speaking about happiness around the world. Davis said, “The feeling of witnessing another person’s growth and personally contributing to it is what this event is all about.” To the scholarship recipients, Davis recommended, “Embrace the challenges and fears that come your way on your life’s journey and use them as the pivotal moments that launch you to that next step towards success”.
Stephanie Guardado, a sophomore at SUNY Buffalo studying Speech & Hearing Sciences, shared, “I received my FCA scholarship during my freshman year and I am completely grateful to have received the scholarship. I was able to buy the books that were necessary for my classes and it gave my family and me a great sense of relief financially. I just want to say thank you so much for making this possible and I am forever grateful.”
Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, President/CEO, FCA, said, “The drive, determination and perseverance of our scholarship recipients are an inspiration to everyone at our agency. Many thanks to FCA’s generous donors for helping to make these kids’ dreams a reality.”
Over the past 33 years, FCA’s Mission Moment Scholarship Fund has gifted over $2,000,000 to students engaged with FCA’s programs and services.
