MINEOLA, NEW YORK, March 12th, 2018– Long Island nonprofit Family & Children’s Association (FCA) held a moving ceremony on March 12th to pay tribute to longtime staff member Lynn Vanderhall, who passed away tragically in August 2017. The agency’s Nursery Co-Op, located in Hempstead, New York, was renamed the Lynn Vanderhall Nursery Co-Op in her honor to commemorate her three decades of service of impacting lives.

While leading the nursery, Lynn provided compassionate care to hundreds of children, helping them learn the alphabet and gain other essential skills to prepare them for entry into the school system. Her knowledge of Spanish helped to enhance the program’s bilingual services while building strong bonds with countless families in Nassau County.

“Lynn was truly the heart and soul of the program,” recalled Nancy Cohan, Vice President, FCA Grants & Program Development. “She started as one of our mothers in the Nursery Co-op and volunteered part-time. She was later named an assistant teacher before advancing to become head teacher at the program.”

Under Lynn’s leadership, the Nursery Co-op grew into an important resource to provide childcare to parents seeking a better life and economic stability through employment, educational and other support services. The short-term childcare and case management program operates solely on fundraising dollars and now serves approximately 50 children, two mornings per week. Parent education workshops are also provided.

“Lynn worked hard to keep the program alive,” Cohan said. “Many children in the nursery went on to achieve academic success. Mothers came to love her and believe in her.”

That love was on full display during the renaming ceremony (appropriately held on Lynn’s birthday, as Cohan and other speakers, including FCA President/CEO Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds honored Lynn’s memory. A plaque was presented to Lynn’s family, as the nursery was officially renamed the Lynn Vanderhall Nursery Co-op.

“We’re proud to recognize Lynn’s incredible dedication to the Long Island community,“ Dr. Reynolds said. “She is missed dearly by everyone at FCA, and together, we will ensure her legacy lives on through the wonderful work of the program to make a difference in so many lives.”
