Family Solutions is a new PINS Diversion program now being offered by a partnership of Family and Children’s Association, Long Beach Reach and Hofstra University’s School of Law.
Its purpose is to offer an immediate response when a conflict between parents and children is leading them to consider a PINS (Person In Need of Supervision) petition to the Family Court. Family and Children’s Association, in partnership with Long Beach Reach and Hofstra University’s School of Law have been funded by the Nassau County Department of Social Services to implement a PINS diversion project for county residents.
Intensive, short-term, strength-based counseling and support will be provided to those families who agree to engage in this process instead of filing a complaint in Family Court.
Recognizing the sense of urgency surrounding such family crises, the program will assign a Family Solution specialist within 24-hours.
A unique feature of this program is the use of the Family Solutions Conference to promote family decision-making as well as facilitated access to a coordinated array of human services that may be required—similar to the County’s “No Wrong Door” approach to service delivery.
Family Solutions will provide the least restrictive intervention needed to prevent a PINS petition and reduce out-of-home placements.
