Project Independence is a comprehensive, non-residential program designed to prepare youths between the ages of 14-21 who are in foster care, or discharged from foster care, to live and work independently in the community when they are no longer eligible for foster care.
Youths participate in individual counseling and group workshops provided by Project Independence to develop independent living skills. In addition, the program works with other community service agencies in order to help each young person with individual living needs and goals.
The program works closely with foster parents as well as the young people by including home visits and supportive services on a regular basis. Foster parent training and support groups are offered throughout the year.
Scholarship
Assistance
In a continuing effort to prepare high school graduates in Family and Children's Association programs for successful independent living, a Scholarship Fund Program was established in 1985 to assist those youngsters who qualify with stipends for college or technical school.
Services
Independent living
skills training is provided as follows:
Support services are
also available to Project Independence participants after discharge from foster
care in the community. These services include:
Independent Living
Project Independence - Nassau can provide a supervised apartment for older youths, ages 17-20, who, in preparation for discharge from foster care, need a supportive, transitional living setting. They must be capable of managing the range of responsibilities necessary to live independently in the community. Staff from Project Independence visit the youths regularly to provide support services. The apartment program is certified by the New York State Department of Social Services.
Project Independence -
Suffolk can provide family
mediation to help facilitate communication between family members when a foster
care youth is at risk of losing his or her current placement. Mediation can help
stabilize the environment and prevent multiple placements. This service is
offered to youth and families on a preventive basis for pre and post residential
placement, pre and post adoption, and if possible pre and post return to family.
Referrals are made only through a Suffolk County Department of Social Services
Caseworker.
