In the Spotlight

Giving Children a Summer to Remember!
It's summertime and we'd like you to meet some of the kids who you'll be helping by giving to our summer camp appeal. Pictured here are Michael and his new camp friend Christopher, children who live right here on Long Island. For 6 year old Michael, and his working mother, the long summer weeks were very difficult. Michael spent most days in front of the TV either at home or at a neighbor's house. His mother spent the summer at work, worrying about Michael and what he was doing all day long.
There wasn't much to enjoy or look forward to. Every day was pretty much the same.

Last year, all that changed when Michael received a Family & Children's camp scholarship to attend our Summer to Remember program.

His life and the lives of many other children changed thanks to the generosity of people like you and our Leadership Level Sponsors:
Newsday Charities, Henry Schein, King Kullen, an anonymous donor, and The Riley Family Foundation.

This year, the Promise Project Team Director Nancy Cohan and Program Director Donna Whitfield-Raphael have created a thematic learning program entitled, "Summer Games." The Summer of Promise program (Out of School Learning) will weave together physical education, geography, and mathematics while celebrating the 2008 Summer Olympics. Youth will learn what it means to be part of a team, about China the host country of this summer's Olympics, and about themselves.

Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) commemorated Memorial Day with a breakfast for the veterans living at our Veterans' Residence in West Hempstead. This residence provides permanent housing for up to eight honorably discharged veterans seeking quality, affordable, and substance-free accommodations in the community. The NEFCU gift also provided the veterans with a new BBQ grill so that they could enjoy many sun-filled meals in the months and years to come. Special guest Kristin DeJesus of NEFCU is pictured here with Family and Children's James Harnett and Paul from the Residence.

Family & Children's Chief Operating Officer Philip M. Mickulas was awarded the Hempstead NAACP's 2008 Humanitarian Award for his efforts on behalf of the residents of the Village of Hempstead. Spring arrived and brought with it our Corporate Angels who dropped in to help us plant, paint and beautify our outreach centers. They brightened up our shelter for teen run-aways and enhanced the property we use as temporary housing for young people in transition. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
