In the Spotlight

Rosanne Scordio
Owner of
Gabrielle's Brasserie & Wine Bar in Rockville Centre

Rosanne Scordio, Family & Children's newest trustee, hosted a benefit dinner on April 14th at her restaurant Gabrielle's Brasserie & Wine Bar in Rockville Centre. 37 lucky people were treated to a fabulous and exclusive evening which included a six-course dinner and wine tasting with proceeds going toward programs that help our area's neediest children and families. Charity never tasted so good!

Scordio, who has six children of her own, understands the importance of providing children with shelter, care, love and support in order to allow them to grow and succeed. That is why she is an advocate for Family & Children's and the work that they do. She also understands what it takes to be a successful business woman. How does she manage her time and juggle her commitments as a mother, wife, business owner, volunteer (at the Nursery Co-op), and philanthropist? It is simply a matter of priorities, which for Rosanne means her children first, then her business, charity, and finally herself. Her philosophy is that people find time to do what they think is important. "Juggling everything is tough, but when you have a good family and supportive friends, it makes a big difference and is in itself a great lesson in caring." She credits her great support system of friends who also have kids as a source of strength because they all work together to help each other.

Scordio also sees a connection between charitable giving and her business goals. Her personal philosophy is that you get more when you give, however she believes giving in a business sense gives back double. "My life changed as soon as I got involved with Family & Children's because of the people I've met through their networking opportunities and the friends I've made. There's so much positive publicity attached to our events and the public really likes the feel good stuff. The public's response to our efforts has been tremendous." For those of you who missed this year's dinner/wine tasting benefit, Rosanne was kind enough to share one of the evening's recipes:

Tropical Shrimp & Fruit Martini
  • 12 medium shrimp cleaned & cooked
  • 5 tablespoons lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons Asian fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 12 mint leaves thinly sliced
  • 1 cup diced mango
  • 1 cup diced green papaya
  • 1 cup diced pineapple
  • 1/2 red onion thinly sliced
  • 3 red chili's deseeded, thinly sliced lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup roasted cashews finely chopped

Combine all ingredients except shrimp and cashews in a bowl. Mix well then season with salt and pepper. Place 3 tablespoons of fruit salad in a 4oz. martini glass. Place shrimp on fruit and top with roasted nuts.

Family & Children's is planning more dinner/wine tasting events. To put your name on our invitation list, please email Marisa Paladino

Grants, Honors & Awards

The Sprint Foundation awarded Family and Children's a $5,000 grant in support of programs at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center. The grant was used to develop a health and fitness program to emphasize the importance of good health, nutrition and fitness habits. As you can see by this picture, the children of the after-school program celebrated Spring with an afternoon of physical education.
Thank you Sprint Foundation!
