Keyspan holiday giving

Mineola-based Family and Children’s Association was the beneficiary of abundant giving from Long Island’s business,  education and not-for-profit communities during the 2007 holiday season. The following is a brief summary of the donations that provided joyful holidays for the agency’s clients, which include families in crisis, youth-at-risk, individuals suffering from mental health and substance abuse problems, runaway and homeless children, and senior citizens in need.

National Grid/KeySpan:
In an effort to assist families in need this Thanksgiving, the volunteer and affinity groups of National Grid/KeySpan joined together and participated in the 2007 “Thanks for Giving” turkey campaign. Donors purchased a paper turkey and the proceeds were then used to purchase 126 ($25 denomination) Pathmark gift cards totaling $3,150, which were donated to Family and Children’s. KeySpan matched this amount through the company’s matching gift fund.
Tracy Nguyen, a former Family and Children’s client and now a KeySpan employee and a member of the KeySpan Asian Leadership Association, organized the “Thanks for Giving” turkey campaign. Along with the Asian Leadership Association affinity group, Tracy chose Family and Children’s Association to be the recipient of their fundraising efforts.
The gift cards were distributed to each of the four Family and Children’s service programs: Senior Care, Prevention/Family Support/Youth, Village of Hempstead Initiative/Hagedorn Family Resource Center, and Behavioral Services.   A special note of thanks is extended to Henry Chiu, Marketing Manager, and Lynn Falanga and the KeySpan Community Volunteers. Lynn was also involved in the effort to collect useful household and personal care items that were given to Family and Children’s Walkabout program as part of the 2007 Adopt-a-Family program.

Lemon Tree Family Hair Salons:
Lemon Tree Corporate headquarters in Levittown donated 20 Gift Certificates for free haircuts that were shared by Family and Children’s Family Ties program.

Century 21 Laffey, Westbury:
Held a Thanksgiving food drive and collected non-perishable food items as well as 40 turkeys of which we accepted 15 (due to a lack of sufficient freezer space.) The donation went to Amy Mahoney in HCBS.

Barnes & Noble Booksellers:
For the past seven years, Barnes and Noble Booksellers have held a holiday book drive for the PASS (Parents and Students Success Afterschool Program) and Pre-K programs at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center.  This year over 600 books were donated by Barnes & Noble customers.

Key Women of America:
Hempstead Branch President Dorothy Porter, and Vice President, Edith Hill, purchased 100 hats and 100 gloves/mittens for the children at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center and made a presentation to the children of “La Escuelita” pre-kindergarten and elementary after-school program.

The Portledge School, Locust Valley:
The Portledge School held a combination books, games and DVD drive to benefit Family and Children’s Roosevelt Counseling and Resource Center program.

Melville Rotary Club:
The Melville Rotary Club provided all the fixings for a holiday party for the children of the Hagedorn Family Resource Center on December 13th.  Joann Slavin, a member of the Melville Rotary and Senior Vice President, H2M Labs, Inc. in Melville, coordinated the event along with several of her fellow Rotarians, and delivered the party items and gifts. The children received presents and were treated to ice cream, cupcakes, candy and juice.

United Way and Target Corporation:
Long Island’s United Way and Target Corporation partnered on a holiday campaign called “Share-a-Tree.”   Every Target store on Long Island received three pre-lit, pre-decorated Christmas trees which were then donated to non-profit agencies for their own internal use or to donate to families in need. The trees received by Family and Children’s Association were  donated to the Roosevelt Counseling and Resource Center, the  Long Island Counseling Center in Elmont, and to Home and Community Based Services in Hempstead.

Cold Weather Coat Drive:
Winter coats, clothing and accessories were made available to men, women and children at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center Auditorium. Generous donations were made by Friends Academy of Locust Valley, Merrick Avenue Middle School in Merrick, Robert Seaman Elementary School in Jericho, Soroptimist International of Nassau County, the Nelson Family of Mt. Sinai, Wilson Elementary School in Rockville Centre, and Wheeler Avenue Elementary School in Valley Stream. Some coats had paper dolls pinned to them with notes from the students at Robert Seaman Elementary School.

Additionally, nine students from C.W. Post College of Long Island University – 8 women’s field hockey team members and 1 player from the men’s football team -- assisted with sorting and organizing the coats and other items at the Hagedorn Auditorium.
