Vocational Education
Our Vocational Education program enables young people and adults to enhance their academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics so that they may obtain a high school equivalency diploma.
Located within our Hempstead Chemical Dependency Treatment Center, the Vocational Educational Program serves adults over 21 who lack specific vocational or educational skills. Clients receive the services they need to improve their ability to attain and maintain self-sufficiency through education and employment.
Services include:
- Educational testing
- One-on-one tutoring
- Vocational counseling
- GED (General Educational Development) preparation
- Training in computer literacy/access to a technology lab
- Job readiness preparation
- Job placement
- Job retention services
In addition, our behavioral health resource center established in 2006 offers both Vocational Education students access mental health and substance abuse counseling.
Community Involvement
The process of finding employment can be daunting, but for disadvantaged men and women, the search often seems impossible. The Vocational Education Program accepts donations of business clothing from individuals and businesses to help our clients dress for job interviews.
By recognizing the challenge that our clients face, you can take steps to make securing employment a little easier. Donations help ease the transition between the job training program and the job-seeking process. Large size clothing is especially needed, but all contributions are welcome. Items sought are:
- Business suits
- Sports jackets
- Slacks
- Business shirts
- Ties

Become a Tutor
Our Vocational Education program is made possible by the generosity of donors and volunteers who meet one-on-one with students to help them attain their GED. If you wish to help these students of all ages, please donate or volunteer to tutor by emailing volunteerservices@familyandchildrens.org
