Strengthening Communities

Village of Hempstead InitiativeMany of the problems faced by our clients derive from large social issues (e.g., poverty, discrimination, un/underemployment, lack of consistent role models, substandard education, and negative influences) and require a focused, holistic solution that encompasses the whole family as well as their community. Our Village of Hempstead Initiative (VHI) provides this focused approach by offering a range of support services for children and families with the belief that as they are supported and strengthened individually, they can give back to their community.

A Community Center

We engage our clients in the heart of their community through our Hagedorn Family Resource Center and The Annex located at 120 and124 Greenwich Street in Hempstead. On our campus, we offer one-stop access to a full array of human services including: a cooperative nursery; after-school programs (K-8th grade); educational enrichment and tutoring; English as a second language for children and adults; independent living training for children in foster care; enrollment in health insurance for uninsured children and families; counseling for at-risk youth; and summer camp programs. In addition, the facility hosts the Hempstead School District’s pre-K program, and together we serve more than 400 children each day. Volunteers from John F. Kennedy HS

Become a Sponsor and Help Fund Programs

There are a variety of math, science and technology programs that we would like to bring into the lives of the children we serve to help them compete with their peers from other towns and villages.  If you'd like to help fund these initiatives, please contact news@familyandchildrens.org
