Family Support
Family Support workers are teachers. They teach families core life skills. Family Support services include teaching:
- parenting skills
- household management
- budgeting
- nutritional information
- cooking
- homework with children
- time management
Family Support Workers also:
- provide emotional support and advocacy
- support to attend appointments
- support clients to make changes in their lives on a daily basis
Services are provided on a daily basis, part-time basis, or other schedule according to need.
Service Provisions
Families sign a contract identifying specific goals to be attained during the initial three months. After three months, services are reviewed and continued, revised or terminated. Services may be continued in three-month segments for up to one year.
Client Population
At-risk families referred through Preventive Service Programs, such as Family and Children's Family Ties.
Referrals are channeled through the Department of Social Services (DSS) to the Family Support Program. As a result, services are made available to families at no charge. A Family Support Worker must be requested by a Preventive Worker.
Families can be one or two parent families. Many are involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) of the Department of Social Services. Families in need of stabilization, or knowledge of life skills, benefit from this kind of support.
